General Education
General Education (GE) is the first part of a degree before you get into the major courses. Basically, General Education is required in a curriculum that makes up the foundation of an undergraduate degree.
General Education is the portion of the curriculum common to all undergraduate students regardless of their major. It exposes them to various domains of knowledge and ways of comprehending social and natural realities, developing in the process: Intellectual competencies such as critical, analytical, and creative thinking, and multiple forms of expression and civic capacities demanded of membership in the community, country, and the world (CMO No. 20 Series of 2013).
Arts and Humanities
Art Appreciation. Develops the ability to appreciate, analyze, and critique works of art. Understand the practical, historical, philosophical, and social relevance of the arts through an interdisciplinary and multimodal approach. Appreciation for Philippine Arts.
Purposive Communication. Writing, speaking, and presenting to different audiences and for various purposes. Communication processes, principles, and ethics. Globalization. Multicultural settings. Critical evaluation of messages and images. Communication aids and strategies. Communication for work and academic purposes.
Mathematics, Science and Technology
Mathematics in the Modern World. Introduction to the nature of mathematics. Appreciation of its practical, intellectual, and aesthetic dimensions, and applications of mathematics in daily life.
Science, Technology, and Society. Deals with interactions between science and technology and social, cultural, political, and economic contexts that shape and are shaped by them. Includes mandatory topics on climate change and environmental awareness.
Social Science and Philosophy
Ethics. Principles and context of ethical behavior in modern society at the level of the person, society, and interaction with the environment and other shared resources. Includes the mandatory topic on Taxation.
Readings in Philippine History. Analyzes Philippine history from multiple perspectives through the lens of selected primary sources in different periods, analyses, and interpretations and from various disciplines and of different genres. Includes mandatory topics on the Philippine Constitution, Agrarian Reform, and Taxation.
The Contemporary World. Examines the multifaceted phenomenon of globalization. Using the various disciplines of the social sciences, it examines the economic, social, political, technological, and other transformations that have created an increasing awareness of the interconnectedness of the peoples and places around the globe. Includes mandatory topics on Population Education in the context of population and demography.
Understanding the Self. Deals with the nature of identity. Factors and forces that affect the development and maintenance of personal identity. Understand the construct of the self from various disciplinary perspectives. Includes the mandatory topics on Family Planning and Population Education.
Mandated Course
Life and Works of Rizal. The life and works of the country's national hero, Jose Rizal. Rizal's biography and his writings, particularly the novels Noli Me Tangere and El Filibusterismo, some of his essays, and various correspondences.
National Service Training Program. National Service Training Program (NSTP) is designed to encourage the youth to contribute to the improvement of the general welfare and the quality of life of Filipino. This will require the students to carry out projects and activities contributory to the general welfare and the betterment of life of community members or the enhancement of its facilities, especially those devoted to improving health, education, safety, livelihood, environment, entrepreneurship, recreation, morals of the citizenry, and other welfare services.
General Education Electives (electives may vary in different university)
Big History. Big History is the modern, scientific origin story, based on the best evidence that scientists and historians have compiled to date. It tells the story of the Universe from the Big Bang to the present, a time span of 13.8 billion years. This course deals with the understanding of key and historical scientific concepts and facts engaging in historical analysis using the theories and practices from multiple disciplines, toward an integrated and interdisciplinary understanding of the history of the universe.
English Skills Enhancement. This course aims to enhance the students' language skills to adapt to the changing communication environment. Intensive lessons in listening, speaking, reading, and writing will be conducted throughout the course to upgrade the students' communication skills for a better and more effective way of communicating with others. It is designed to be an enhancement of the student's language proficiency for the widest application in the future in any endeavor.
Kontekstwalisadong Komunikasyon sa Filipino. Ang KOMFIL ay isang praktikal na kursong nagpapalawak at nagpapalalim sa kontekstwalisadong komunikasyon sa wikang Filipino ng mga mamamayang Pilipino sa kani-kanilang mga komunidad sa partiular, at sa buong lipunang Pilipino sa pangkalahatan. Nakatuon ang kursong ito sa makrokasanayang pakikinig at pagsasalita, gayundin sa kasanayan sa paggamit ng iba't-ibang tradisyonal at modernong midya na makabuluhan sa kontekstong Pilipino sa iba't ibang antas at larangan.
Sinesosyedad/Pelikulang Panlipunan. Ang SINESOS ay kurso sa Panitikan na nakatuon sa paglinang sa kasanayan sa kritikal na panonood at komparatibong pagsusuri ng mga pelikulang makabuluhan sa konteksto ng Pilipinas. Sa pamamagitan ng dulog na tematiko ay inaasahang masasaklaw ng kurso ang mga paksang makabuluhan sa pag-unawa ng kontemporaryong lipunang lokal, nasyonal at internasyonal, alinsunod sa pagtanaw sa panatikan bilang transpormatibong pwersa.
Physical Education (may vary in different university)
Physical Fitness. This course involves basic movement skills for body mechanics, self-testing skills, basic motor skills, perceptual and manipulative skills, and other movement activities for the improvement and maintenance of health and physical fitness.
Aquatics. This course introduces the fundamental skills in swimming such as floating, threading, bubbling skills, the fundamental strokes such as freestyle, backstroke,
breaststrokes, and butterfly, proper swimming conduct, and the conditioning exercises.
Athletic Sports and Management. This course covers significant underlying principles and theories concerning management related to sports and athletics. This will help you understand and internalize the conceptual analysis of effective management in the field of physical education.
Recreational and Leisure Activities. This course covers the different activities for recreation, leisure, and relaxation. It emphasizes the theory and guidance of the well-rounded program of recreation and deals with the essentials of programming for recreation. It also touches on the values and rewards of recreation and its importance to the community, government, social institutions, and schools and includes the study of recreation administration and leadership procedures, practices, and principles.
